Teen Orthodontics

The best time for orthodontic treatment to correct most cosmetic and functional problems is during the high school years.

For decades, we have known that the most effective and efficient orthodontic results are achieved during the rapid growth in adolescence. Our specialist orthodontist may recommend treatment with braces only, or they may recommend a combination of braces with other fixed or removable appliances (plates).

Nowadays aesthetics may be just as important to some teenagers as they are to adults.  If the metal braces with their fun colour rings are not appealing, clear braces, clear aligners like Invisalign, or invisible lingual braces are available to even our patients who are in high school.

Teen Orthodontics FAQs

  • Your teeth can always shift and move throughout life. Without retainers, your teeth will go crooked again at some time in the future, requiring a second or more rounds of treatment at additional cost. Future movement cannot be predicted, so please expect to use your retainers for a very long time, until the day you don't mind seeing your teeth go crooked again.

  • The white brackets themselves, attached directly to the teeth, do not discolour. However, what discolours are the small clear rubber O-rings that are tied around each bracket to hold the wire in, due to degradation in saliva. This discolouration is only mild, but is visible over the very clear brackets. All old O-rings are renewed at each visit.

  • This depends on the severity of the orthodontic problems, but average treatment times are between 12 to 18 months.

  • Yes. Your dentist will be able to still visually examine your teeth and give them a professional clean with braces fitted. It is also recommended that your dentist has screened your oral health before orthodontic treatment begins in order to avoid any surprises (like hidden cavities) while braces are on.

  • There is inconclusive evidence that wisdom teeth alone cause teeth to shift. They grow into the mouth at a time that usually coincides with late maturation changes in the jaws, which is what influences teeth alignment and teeth may shift.
